Sending E-mail

We recommend that you use web-based email when you use any Wi-Fi hotspot. If you normally use Outlook or another
email program, check with your ISP or IT help desk to see if webmail is also available for your account (it usually is!).

You can read your email using Outlook and other programs at most hotspots, but you will have a problem sending mail
if you have configured the program to use your Internet Service Provider's "SMTP" server. To fix this, configure your
program to use an authenticated SMTP server (you may have one at work, but most ISP's don't provide this).

To get access to a free, authenticated SMTP server that you can use from many hotspots,
you can sign up for a free email account that includes that service.
In most cases, you don't have to use the new email address they give you.
Here is a list of free email services:
http://www.iopus.com/guides/bestpopsmtp.htm.

You can use a free Gmail account from Google this way:

  • In your email client software, under Outgoing mail, set the SMTP server to smtp.gmail.com.
  • Set the your username is yourgooglemailname@gmail.com and make sure "Use username and password" is checked.
  • Also check off "TLS" under "Use secure connection."
  • Go into your gmail Settings:Accounts and "Make default" an account other than your gmail account.
This will cause gmail to re-write the From field with your preferred email address.

However, note that for added protection against spam, some Gigazad hotspots will not allow you to use some types of SMTP servers.

Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network)

Some Gigazad hotspots do not support VPN access.

Using Chat Programs

Gigazad supports chat programs such as Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. However, some locations
have firewall settings that block these programs.

P2P File Sharing

Please do not use file sharing applications at Gigazad hotspots. Refer to our Terms of Service.
